Toboe's journal lives!

Don't know if I'll go back to doing the daily log of Toboe's posts. Maybe. I have quite a log of backlogging to do, and that's not encouraging.

Anyway, I had a relationships list a while back. But I haven't updated it in months so this might be the easier way to go. Toboe meets people all the time so ask here if you wish to know how much the puppy loves you.

On the pup/OOC meme

Yes I play him young. Probably too young at times. I'm working with that. But I figure he's a young *wolf* in a human camp. Many human things are bound to confuse him, except for those he's familiar with from his days with the old woman. I also like to make him very inquisitive since Toboe always struck me as one of those types to be constantly wondering about things, even if he's unsure about whether to ask. Despite this touch of naivety, he can also pick up on certain things if implied. Definitions, not so much. Emotions and ideas, now you're talking. Onto emotions, Toboe is quite emotional. Let's not forget his total breakdown after killing Leara's bird, his hissy fit with Tsume early on or his consideration to abandon the pack for the Indians after the loss of Kiba and Blue. So yes, my Toboe has a tendency to overreact to things and misread statements for the worst.

However, apart from the young persona, Toboe is still very much a wolf. He will put himself in danger if he thinks he can help someone. He will make himself a threat if he has to. And he does view non-human death differently than a human of his disposition would. He also likes to prove his strength by getting into the thick of things and will occasionally show more of his mature side as the situation calls for it. Being a puppy, he will also act like a total goof when it comes to cuteness and fluffy critters. (See Eevee!Renji and Menchi).

In case you're wondering why Toboe is so secretive about his true self, realize that the only time someone found out about him, aside from the woman who raised him, she freaked out and tried to get her father to catch him. Not good times for the pup. Then again, he also killed her pet. Speaking of killing, let's touch upon emo!Toboe for a moment. Due to his emotional nature, Toboe can be very melancholy if provoked. Certain things set him off. Guilt, death of a loved one, natural law and failure to make someone happy (especially those he likes) are some key points. Having killed his care-taker by accident, Toboe has some guilt/confidence issues and will fall back on those if the conversation falls that way. Also, as with Elphie, he understands how nature works and can be pensive about it. He doesn't like these tragic conversations and will try his best to work something positive back into them when the occur.

As for friends, as long as you're not overtly creepy or seen doing something evil, Toboe will like you, and if you show interest in him, he will see you as his friend. He's fairly easy to get along with, if you look past the semi-obliviousness.

One more thing. Icons. If an animal/person who has touched Toboe speaks to him in LJ comment, he will reply with a wolf icon. He will also lock the comments in that section. Any other uses of the wolf icons will be quite obvious, such as when Toboe showed Ash his 'transformation'.

I think we shall conclude this with the anonymous OOC meme. Point out my mistakes, guys. I live to please/improve. Just remember if you're too mean, the pup will have to howl a little.

Oct. 16 -- It just tears you up inside, don't it?

After missing the initial onslaught of the Gentleman, Toboe arrives soon after the death of Cal and Kabuto and catchest up on things with Sanzo. Thoroughly confused, Toboe seeks out more information from Rikuou, who tells him that he should join Buffy's search party instead of tracking on his own. ~~I also forget continuity a hundred times over.~~ Toboe teams up with Buffy to go Gentleman-hunting.

Toboe also makes a post to gather up all of the talkers/non-talkers for safety purposes. Anne, Niou, Tot, Ishida and lots of others show up. Alex tries to determine if the Gentleman are actually his old buddies and Alessa makes an occasional experience to creep them both out. Toboe suggests Alex use his power of speech to help out others, ignoring the campers' unease with Alex. George tries to convince Toboe that she isn't scared and Toboe takes it a bit hard at first. Toboe's good nature eventually wins over and he warns her against wandering around on her own. He breaks the hard news about Kabuto's death to Fletcher. Ranma confuses Toboe with a comment about a cowbell ~~because this camp needs more cowbell!~~ and they discuss different methods of handling the Gentleman problem. Neji confirms he still has his voice and after Toboe makes sure Itachi also all right, Neji offers his aid. Sousuke also requests explanation from the pup.

Pathetic puppy-fighting action commences once Buffy and Toboe discover the Gentleman during their attack on Gil and Renji. After a sad defeat, Toboe whimpers with Inui and Wes. Toboe is relieved to find Cal alive and kicking ~~in a manner of speaking~~. A later encounter comes with the usual fluffy angst and an added treat of an orgy illustration that sadly flies over the pup's head. The Gentleman thing resolves itself with Heather killing them off with a scream and Toboe congratulating her.

Some random intros with Tsunade, Grandad Freeman and Evangeline, Lupin, Ishida's daddy and Roy. Yeesh. *sighs in exhaustion* Oh and drive-by first encounter with Riddle over the whole Gentleman confrontation.

Later, he runs into Goku who's just returned from being assaulted by gophers. Toboe warns him that these may not be good friends to be with. And Goku whips out Peanut Butter and mild violence ensues. Toboe also tries to coax Alex out of his tree by suggesting a rooming situation with one of the counselors. Alex is not hot on this idea at all. Toboe tries to understand why Rikuou dislikes the camp enough to leave.

Moral of this post: Continuity, what continuity?

Oct. 10 Arguing with Toboe is like arguing with a wall. A big, fluffy, doe-eyed wall.

Toboe starts the night by being confused about splendor of Lord Il Palazzo. He tries to smooth things over with Excel, but the snipping still manages to sneak in from time to time. Murata's wishing post provides the best angsting opportunity. But it eventually leads to happy fluff and the conclusion that Murata is a fairy. In Itachi's post about his lyric-speak the other night, Toboe tries to encourage the musical side of the ninja and takes on Inui in a battle of logic. How the hell did he win?! He meets Chihaya and encourages her ACROSS family, despite his unease with Excel. There's also some Sasuke baiting and some Naruto birthday cheer. And some confusion over Ash's igloo.

Oct. 9 It's not easy being the nice guy

Kira announces Nishi's birthday and is a little concerned about meeting the family, especially a kittified Nishi. He tries to figure out what's wrong with Kabuto's picture. Later, they discuss Toboe's new Konoha headband and Kabuto tries to adjust things. ((Alas, my failing at life and post-missing deprives Kabuto of his chance to unmask the pup.)) Omi also piques Toboe's interest with his "florit" profession. Toboe tells Excel to NO to animal sacrifices and the battle for Menchi begins anew. It is interrupted by an important announcement by Elgala. After some angst, gender confusion and encouragement from Menchi, Toboe sends her back to the safety of Elgala's arms. Oh, if only he knew the web of insanity in which Elgala exists.

Our next mission is to cheer up a despondent Air. We fail miserably. XD An attempt to aid a hungry Shikamaru has less than stellar , as Shikamaru chomps into Hanatarou and Toboe plays guard dog. Hanatarou later thanks his unusual rescuer. Buffy gives Toboe some good advice about zombies and Toboe ponders the mysteries of the Shouta Squad with Chisame and Tot. He even considers buying a costume from Urahara.

Oct. 2--Not always so innocent

Ari's poll raises some questions in Toboe's mind. Chisame and Heather also show up to answer the pup's query.

Toboe decides to talk animals with Elphaba and along the way, Menchi shows up and Toboe advises her to stay in the cabin because Excel's around. Toboe's and Elphaba's converations gets more serious as it goes on, forcing Toboe out of his bubbly puppy mood for a bit. Then they talk love. Heh, Elfie makes me play pensive Toboe.

Stopped by to ask Kira bout his feelings. Tried to cheer up Hinata about her shadow situation and they talked ninjas. Also met up with a more sane Mello and discussed Mello's love of chocolate. Learned that Neji got his memory back. Briefly talked with Itach about the picture he found later.

Near the end of the night, Toboe wanted to play in the onsen with the others. With some help from Kazahaya, he discovered he could alter his human illusion as he wanted. Cal also stopped by to tease. Also briefly saw Yzak. Before testing out his l33t stripping powers with Kazahaya, Toboe learned about the problems of men bathing with woman from Ami. Also saw James bringing his Pokemon to the springs.

Combination of Sept. 30 and Oct. 1--The Ways of the Ninja and Mission: Protect Menchi!

Ash and Toboe meet again in Winry's post, where Ash reveals he can turn into a cow! Thinking Ash will just see it as another trick, Toboe reveals his own special trick. Toboe wants Ash to teach him more about magic but Ash proves to be less than adept. Toboe later meets up with Ari again who shows him his own magic and reveals that it takes a lot out of him. When Toboe finds Ari again, Ari's in the form of a Pichu.

Toboe runs into Winry who's offering pie to the sick campers. Toboe learns that Al is also sick too. Toboe wants to find some medical plants to help but Al cautions him about the dangers.

Cal has a post mocking all of the sick people. He explains the camp's regenerative abilities to Toboe and Toboe's naievety leads to some general confused Toboe fluff. Toboe worries that Cal dislikes him but, Cal returns to gape at Toboe's growing friendship with Ash.

Toboe finds a new friend/protector in Kazahaya, who offers Toboe his cabin and tells him that he will ask Gwendal to make him a plushie. Toboe talks music with Michiru and later tries to persuade her into a duet with James' Chimecho. Later Toboe wanders into Kazuma who's searching for his rolling pin. Toboe also runs into cursed Mello, who creeps Toboe out and reminds me of the owl from the Forest of Death.

When Toboe tries to talk to Bob, Kabuto shows up tells him about the crocodiles. Toboe makes some jokes about Kabuto's head protector and Kabuto eventually hands over his leaf protector. Toboe showed it off to all his new friends. Kazahaya attempts to he help him fix it and ends up learning about Toboe's secret. The other ninjas like Naruto and Neji aren't happy with Toboe's newest adornment. Naruto tries to give Toboe a reassuring pat and ends up revealing the wolf. He, in turn, shows Toboe traces of his kyuubi side. Itachi shows up too and Toboe learns of his problems with Neji's memory loss.

Tot, Momoko and Sousuke also dropped bye to meet him in the post. He teases Tot about her name at first, but then warms up to her. He's such a nutty pup.

In James' post, Toboe also finds Menchi and learns that Excel sees her as food. He promises to keep her safe. He eventually discovers Excel and tries to keep her from finding Menchi. This is also the first time we really see an angry Toboe. Ash shows up after Excel mentions something about PETA and tells Toboe to give her back because he thinks Excel's nice. Toboe refuses and Ash seems to understand.

Toboe's night concludes with chastising Chizuru for her bad sense of humor.

OOC: Seeking Paradise

Since many campers have seen Wolf's Rain but only in passing and only a few episodes at most, we'll do a mini-rundown on some WR canon. Up to the near the of the series for now because, in my head, Toboe is somewhere between fighting the walrus and entering the Black City. So no face-off with Jagara or OVAs. I might include conclusion info later.

Just so you know now, I believe Toboe loves Tsume and the feeling is shared. It may or may not be romantic, but it's definitely love.

THE PACK

Kiba: leader but not by choice, he's the one with the instincts and drive, he's the one who knows how to find Paradise somehow

Hige: the rolly-polly one, usually in a good mood and carefree but also quite witty, he loves his food and girls and both get him into a lot of trouble, he sees Toboe as a kid brother and teases him constantly

Tsume: Brusque and adverse to relationships. He used to manage a gang in Freeze City. They stole food from the government. On one raid, the youngest of Tsume's gang is killed when he falls and Tsume tries to save him by biting his arm for leverage. The kid freaks and falls to his death. It is possible Tsume sees Toboe as his chance to redeem for that failure. Later Tsume's gang betrays him and he leaves with Kiba and the others. His reasons for not trusting friendship are later revealed in the OVAs.

THE SERIES

First of all, most wolves are said to be extinct in Toboe's world. They've been missing for many years. Those who remain have either fallen into the guise of work dogs or assemiliated into the human world under their human illusions. Their world is also some strange mix between a Russian wasteland and a pseudo-future landscape with spaceships, artificial intelligence and lots of technology, with some forest and green spots tossed in. Don't ask.

Toboe was somehow abandoned by his pack when he was very young and taken in by an older woman. She raised him as a dog and he loved her very much. But he was rambunctious as he got older. One day when he was especially happy, he jumped on the old woman and wouldn't get off. He didn't realize that he was too heavy for her and she was having breathing difficulties. She died while he was too excited to notice. Toboe harbors deep guilt about this accident. The old woman always wore a set of three think bangles on her wrist. Toboe took them when she died and now wears them on his right paw.

After she died, Toboe tried to live by himself but he was too sheltered and unused to city life. Other animals tormented him and drove him from food. Then he met Leara, a young girl who fed him and befriended him in his human illusion. Leaving her, he runs into Tsume, another wolf. The two don't have much time for chat as a hunter shows up: Quent, an old sherrif who's obsessed with finding the wolves that killed his family. Tsume flees. Quent tries to shoot Toboe, who's too scared to move. Tsume returns and attacks Quent, helping Toboe to escape. High on the hero worship and the ecstasy of finding another like him, Toboe tags along Tsume. But Tsume doesn't want friendship. He drives the pup away.

Toboe returns to Leara, who's playing with her hawk. Wanting to join, Toboe chases after the bird and catches it, killing it. When he brings it back, Leara is devastated and Toboe can't cope with more guilt. He freaks out and howls, revealing himself to Leara. Tsume hears and snatches Toboe from the scene before anything can happen. He takes Toboe back to his keep and feeds him while explaining the truth about wolves and humans and how they can never coexist. Toboe points out that Tsume is the leader of a gang of humans who steal food. Tsume says he uses them and it's not the same. Toboe's naievety grates on Tsume and he tells Toboe to get out. Having had his fill of Tsume's unwillingness to accept friends, Toboe leaves.

Toboe returns to city life with a new resolve. He's found by two other wolves, Hige and Kiba who are searching for the flower maiden Cheza so she can help them find Paradise (for more info, check further down; it has its own section.) Toboe opts to come with. They find an injured Tsume in the sewer; he got into another spat with Quent and Quent's dog, Blue. Kiba convinces the group that humans won't ever accept them and their only future lies in Paradise. He leads them out of the city. Along the way, they are chased and Toboe almost falls in the same way Tsume's gang member did. Tsume bites him to grab him the same way but Toboe, being a wolf, cooperates and is saved.

The group runs along. Tsume tries to leave early on and gets persued by Toboe. The two are then attacked by a robot and Tsume is injured protecting Toboe. Toboe's affection for him grows and we have the cute leg-licking scene that all WR yaoi fangirls know by heart. Later Tsume tries to lead the machine away from Toboe so Toboe can escape. Thankfully, Kiba saves them. Throughout their quest, Tsume keeps trying to leave and Toboe keeps pursuing. And Quent keeps chasing after them.

They find Cheza, the artificially-created human that was built by the technology-advanced rulers known as Nobles. Many desire Cheza, including the main noble, Darcia, and scientist Cher. Though the wolves, aside from Kiba, don't entirely trust Cheza at first, they warm up to her and will protect her at any cost. She is their key to Paradise and they love her. She also has the ability to heal them when they're injured and her singing puts them at ease and makes them happy.

The wolves and Cheza make an attempt to discover the road to Paradise but when they've created a path (through this bizarro howling/dancing ritual), Darcia shows up and mortally injures them all with his ship and lasers. Yep, lasers. Cheza heals them but is stolen by Darcia. The wolves are distraught but determined to get her back. While recovering, they encounter Blue again, who's now revealed to be half wolf, half dog. She joins the pack.

Everything goes sour after the wolves make a raid on Darcia's Keep. Cheza gets stolen by another Noble, Jagara. Kiba and Blue are separated from the others. Their confidence is shaken. We get a brief interlude with Toboe finding a half-frozen Quent, who's searching for Blue, and staying with him to keep him warm. Quent is too delirious to realize he's with Toboe and not Blue. This goes back to Toboe's natural love for humans, even those who shoot at him. After some friendly advice from our neighborhood natives (What's with BONES and Indians?) and a talking horse, the group is reunited with Kiba and off again. This is also the time when Toboe actively makes the decision to stay with the pack. He had been uncertain after losing Kiba and considered stayinw with the natives. But he decides he wants to be strong now and help the others.

Some more screwy alliances are made. A GINORMOUS walrus attacks the pack and badly injures Toboe's friends. He snaps, fights the walrus and kills it, thus earning his place. That said, it is not a good idea to really piss off the little guy. He's a wolf through and through and will show it if pushed too far. The pack makes it to Jagara's city, the Black City, determined to get back Cheza.

PARADISE

Also known as Rakuen, this concept is crux of the series. It's also the most intangible. Fans of WR have speculated its meaning for a long time. The wolves think it's a place where they can find other wolves and be happy. Humans think it's the salvation of their world. It's also generally viewed as a myth and connected with The Book of The Moon. The prophecy states only the wolves can find Paradise and indicates the Flower Maiden in required. The Nobles also want to create their own artificial Paradise using Cheza and the blood of the chosen wolf, Kiba. Whether or not, the wolves actually find Paradise at the end is up to interpretation. Since Toboe doesn't really understand it, I don't think others should be required to either.

ILLUSIONS

Did a quick post about this in the OOC comm, but I'll touch upon it again here. Somehow, wolves are able to move among humans disguised as humans. Possibly an evolution made necessary by their dwindling numbers. They are NOT shapeshifters. They don't change. They are wolves and trick the human eye. Being wolves, they recognize other wolves and see only their wolf form.

In the series, the illusion is used for both "OMG bishie!" factor and to show what the human characters are seeing. The times we know humans see the wolf forms are when Tsume grabs his gang member, when Quent's drunk, when they attack people (slip-up in scene where Tsume holds down a traitor gang member and still appears human), when the feeble old man spots them, when another human is very disoriented and groggy and when they're unconscious. I also think there's a loophole that people who know what they are can see the wolf, such as the Nobles. It's hard to say since half of the time the wolves are around the Nobles, they are attacking them.

That's why I say the illusion fails when the wolves are in emotion-overdrive (anger, sadness, pain), when they're touched or when humans are somehow inebriated. So yeah, it's a fairly week illusion and can be piereced with certain abilities.

Also, this makes clothes illusions too. They aren't really wearing them (I don't care about randomly shirtless Kiba because that makes no sense!). I might play with this later on if it makes things overly complicated. But for now, I'm sticking with that notion. But as part of the illusion, if the wolves are hurt but not enough to knock out the illusion, the clothes reflect the injured state. They'll look torn, bloodstained, ect.

Generally, it's easier to just view Toboe as a talking wolf for now. If a wolf can't do it, he can't either. But that shouldn't effect most things at camp. It's not like we have cars or things that require hand-eye coordination.

As for the typing/Netting abilities and other random inconsistencies that are just too cute to resist, it's camp. 'Nuff said.

ETA: After some help from Kazahaya-mun, I decided that since his appearance is an illusion, he can shape it as he wills. He just may not realize he has to do it at first. Also, since he's never done it before, he's not sure he can so he'll be hesitant.

God I hope I'm done now. Dang confusing canon.

Sept. 29 -- Arrival

Because I'm revising this from its original version, it's now just going to be a rundown of the characters and what happened between them and Toboe. The rest of the entries will be more like the ones above.

Alphonse: Tells Toboe about the camp and his kitten.

Chizuru: Just a general getting to know you session. She also implies that Toboe looks like a girl.

Soushi: He just talks to Toboe about the hazards of the molesting trees.

Anne: Another quick getting to know you session.

Ash & Pikachu: Toboe is a little uneasy of Ash at first because of what people are saying about him and because of Pikachu's shocking abilities, but he gradually begins to like Pikachu more and more and Ash in turn.

Itachi: Toboe just cutes up Itachi like crazy because Itachi reminds him of Tsume.

Ari: Ari agrees with Toboe's fear of cats.

~~Shigure: Toboe has an uneasy moment with the now idled-out Shigure.~~

Cal: Toboe finds him really pretty and mistakes him for a girl at first. Cal ups the confusion by telling Toboe he's a hermaphrodite.

Tatsuki: She is a little wary of Toboe's resemblance, in personality, to Ash and tells him the importance of wearing camp and avoiding the tentacle monster from the lake.

Yuusuke: Their conversation is cut short as Toboe mistakes Yuusuke's warning about being careful with his laptop.

Goku: Goku flusters Toboe with his smelling dog on him, but later they bond over liking puppies.

Luna: Luna tells Toboe a bit about her world and why owls aren't so bad.

Raistlin: Makes a fire for the camp but unnerves Toboe with his sensing of the wolf.

Miroku: Quick meet and greet where Miroku praises Buddha as man's best friend.
